ZUG, Switzerland -- Saipem’s shallow water pipelay barge Castoro Dieci (C10) is preparing to start work on the near-shore section of the Nord Stream gas pipeline in the Baltic Sea.
The vessel left Rotterdam on June 16, sailed into Rügen earlier this week, and is currently docked in the Sassnitz ferry port in Mukran. It had been laid up in Rotterdam for nearly four months undergoing a retrofit to meet the demands of the Nord Stream project.
The C10, which does not have its own propulsion system, was towed along the Danish coast by the tug boat Primus.
Final preparations in Mukran will ensure that the vessel can start laying the pipeline in the Greifswalder Bodden region on schedule at the end of this month.
The first 80 pipes to be laid in this region have been loaded onto the pipe carrier vessel Ocean Spirit and will shortly be transferred to the C10. These pipes, weighing around 23 metric tons (25 tons), were manufactured in Mülheim an der Ruhr, and covered with an 11-cm (4.3-in.) concrete coating in Mukran.
