HELSINKI -- Three Finnish and two Russian companies will cooperate to develop a new type of oil spill combat icebreaker for Russian shipping company Sovcomflot.
STX Finland, Aker Arctic Technology, and Southeast Trading Group signed the agreement last week in Lappeenranta, Finland, with OAO Sovcomflot and FSUE Rosomorport. The multipurpose vessel will feature an asymmetrical hull based on a development by Aker Arctic Technology. It will be able to adopt a sideways movement to collect oil in severe ice conditions, and to break a broad ice band.
The 67-m (220-ft) long, 19-m (62-ft) wide vessel also will be able to provide support, escorting, and towing tasks for large tankers in the Baltic Sea, along with rescue tasks. It will be equipped with three rudder propeller devices.
STX Finland specializes in building special-purpose icebreaking and ice-class vessels and has a long history of cooperation with Russia’s maritime industry.
