Tankers under development to transport C02 to North Sea wells

ULSAN, South Korea -- Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) is working with Maersk Tankers to developing next-generation liquefied C02 carriers, which should be available by 2015.
The development is linked to the Finncap project, designed to capture carbon dioxide (C02) emitted from power plants in Finland. HHI says the new carriers will deliver and offload the captured C02 at purpose-designed injection wells in the North Sea.
HHI adds that it has already completed basic designs for semi-refrigerated and semi-pressurized C02 carriers in co-operation with Maerks Tankers. It also plans to develop multi-use ships to carry either C02/LPG or C02/ammonia.
Maersk estimates that global demand for C02 carriers will reach 380 vessels by 2020, as more countries act to reduce emissions.
