TEHRAN -- Officials from Iran have inaugurated the country’s first semisubmersible rig purpose-built for deepwater drilling in the Caspian Sea.
The Iran-Alborz, weighing 14,000 tons (12,700 metric tons), was built at the Sadra yard on the southern Caspian coast. It has been designed for operations in waves of up to 21 m (69 ft), in water depths of up to 1,030 m (3,379 ft), and to drill down to subsurface depths of 6,000 m (19,685 ft).
According to Iran’s Petroenergy Information Network (Shana), construction, installation and launching of the rig was performed 100% by an Iranian workforce and Iranian engineers, for a total outlay of $80 million.
Habib Jadidi, managing director of Sadra Co., added: “The structure is equipped with the latest and most advanced technology and equipment in the world, as well as following environmental, hygiene, safety, and workforce welfare principles. It has received all international certificates requested for such facilities.”
