Neptune Marine Oil & Gas has completed a $340-million upgrade of its deepwater drillship Neptune Explorer.

SINGAPORE -- Neptune Marine Oil & Gas has completed a $340-million upgrade of its deepwater drillship Neptune Explorer.

After almost three years of upgrading and conversion at the Sembawang Shipyard in Singapore, the Neptune Explorer is now a dynamically positioned deepwater drilling rig with a variable deckload of 7,220 metric tons (7,959 tons). It is equipped to work in water depths of up to 5,000 ft (1524 m).

The overhaul of the drillship included the installation of a new fifth-generation drilling package comprising a 1.5 derrick with a pipe handling system that includes offline stand-building capabilities and cyberbase control system.

Other upgrades included a complete overhaul of the marine system as well as the installation of a new power generation system and a new helicopter deck.
