STAVANGER -- Talisman Energy’s recent Grevling oil discovery in the Norwegian North Sea could hold 40-130 MMbbl, according to partner Det norske oljeselskap.

This upward evaluation follows the completion of an appraisal well, 15/12-21 A, drilled to delineate the size of the find in production license 038. It extended the proven oil column to a total of 188 m (617 ft), with oil encountered in the same Middle Jurassic and Upper Triassic reservoir rocks.

The latest well was drilled to a vertical sub-surface depth of 3,306 m (10,846 ft), and was terminated in the Upper Triassic Skaggerak formation. It was not formation tested, but data and samples were collected.

According to Det norske, the partners could develop Grevling swiftly as a tieback to the Varg field, 16 km (9.9 mi) to the south, but they may opt for a standalone development.

“It also increases the probability of exploration success in nearby licenses PL 408 and PL 337, where Det norske has scheduled two exploration wells,” says VP for Reserves and Area Development Odd Ragnar Heurn. These will be on the Skardkollen and Storkollen prospects later this year and in 2010.

The jackup Maersk Guardian drilled the latest well in a water depth of 86 m (282 ft). It will next drill a production well for Talisman in PL 316.
