HAMBURG, Germany -- The Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research of Bremerhaven has awarded SCHIFFKO a contract to design the research and icebreaker Aurora Borealis.

The contract comprises the initial design concept, general arrangement planning, and full tender documentation. The ship will facilitate research in ice and open water conditions in geology, geophysics, oceanography, biology, glaciology, bathymetry, meteorology, and atmosphere physics.

The Aurora Borealis will be a multi-purpose icebreaking research vessel for Arctic and Antarctic operations with the capability to autonomously navigate in ice with a thickness of up to 4.5 m (13 ft). The vessel will also perform drilling operations at water depths of up to 5,000 m (16,404 ft) with a penetration of up to 1,000 m (3,281 ft).

The vessel will have a length between perpendiculars of 165 m (541 ft), the highest icebreaker classification, and more than 55 MW of propulsive power.
