LEIDSCHENDAM, the Netherlands — Fugro has converted the geophysical vessel Fugro Pioneer to be ready to operate on green methanol-power engines.

Use of green methanol can cut carbon emissions by more than 90% compared to conventional diesel, the company claims. It has adopted this measure in response to the growing focus on sustainability in tenders for the offshore sector.

The vessel was converted in the Netherlands by the Fugro-led consortium MENENS (Methanol as Energy Step Towards Emission-free Dutch Shipping) with a grant from the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO).

Two of Fugro Pioneer’s four original engines will be replaced by new methanol-capable engines later this year, with the others retained for operations in regions where green methanol is not currently available.
