KRISTIANSAND, NorwaySiem Offshore is working with Wärtsilä to develop technologies that can reduce CO2 emissions from the company’s 26-strong vessel fleet by 50% by 2030.

Each vessel will undergo a review for appropriate solutions, potential operational improvements and life extension needs. Siem is targeting full carbon neutrality by 2050.

ESG director Jon August Houge said, “Our existing fleet are in large degree powered by Wärtsilä, and we have for a longer period cooperated on new environmental friendly solutions.”

Cato Esperø, head of sales with Wärtsilä Norway, added, “Since no single solution will be relevant to every ship, by working together we intend to find what works best and most efficiently on a case-by-case basis.”

Wärtsilä has developed solutions in recent years for the maritime sector such as LNG, methanol and ammonia engines and carbon capture technology. One its innovations involves operating combustion engines running on ammonia, which it claims can cut emissions by about 70%.
