LEIDSCHENDAM, the Netherlands – France’s Directorate General of Energy and Climate (DGEC) has asked Fugro to perform investigations to support the development of future wind farms in the Sud-Atlantique zone of the Bay of Biscay.

The acquired geodata will be available to pre-selected developers for use in their preliminary engineering design studies and future tenders.

Next month, the 86-m long Fugro Quest will start acquiring geotechnical data across a 430-sq-km area in a region known for its harsh offshore conditions. The vessel, the newest in Fugro’s fleet, is outfitted to conduct the survey in extreme weather and deep water.

In addition, the crew will deploy the WISON Mk V Ecodrive, SEACALF Mk V Deep Drive and dedicated coring systems to collect soil samples.

Fugro will use insights into the composition of the soil to create a ground model for determining the optimum locations of future wind farms and offshore substations.

The Sud-Atlantique zone will include a 1-GW project 40 km offshore Oleron island, followed by an adjacent 1-GW project.
