LONDON – The International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) has expanded its ‘Guidelines for Walk to Work (W2W) Operations’ (IMCA M254).

The guidelines, first published in October 2020, were designed to help standardize the way that vessels provide personnel with safe access to offshore structures in the oil and gas and wind sectors, and were developed under the direction of IMCA’s Marine Division Management Committee.

Vessel owners, wind farm operators and motion-compensated gangway manufacturers contributed, working with an offshore energy industry focused steering group comprising manufacturers of motion-compensated gangway systems.

The expanded guidelines include nine sections covering walk-to-work motion-compensated gangway operations for the offshore energy industry, with advice on selecting the appropriate vessel and gangway, gangway maintenance, ensuring the competence of key personnel, and emergency preparedness.

There are also six appendices covering emergency protocols, a framework for hazard identification, training and experience needs, a safety report template, an induction curriculum, and guidelines on workability analysis.
