Norwegian supply vessel driven by biofuel

ULSTEINVIK, Norway – Island Offshore’s platform supply vessel Island Crusader is running on biofuel, under a pilot managed by Lundin Energy offshore Norway.
According to Island Offshore, last year the vessel consumed 1.502 metric tons (1.656 tons) of LNG, with associated CO2 emissions of 4.206 metric tons (4.64 tons).
Switching to biogas should eliminate the CO2 emissions completely, the company claimed.
Engine supplier Bergen Engines advised that the move to biofuel could take place without the need for any modifications to the vessel.
The biogas is produced from a mixture of cow manure and waste from fish and wood processing. It mainly comprises methane: following combustion, CO2 and water are formed; however, as the raw material comes from biological materials, the combustion is calculated as CO2-neutral, with no net increase in the CO2 level in the atmosphere.
