HOUSTON --SensorTran and Ocean Design, Inc. (ODI) have agreed to jointly offer a fiber optic solution offshore for the "first time." The companies showcased their technologies at the Offshore Technology Conference.

According to the companies, they will create subsea fiber optic sensor deployment schemes and provide system performance data "to simplify project design and installation for offshore oil and gas projects."

Under the agreement, the companies will be working together to install optical sensing fiber inside umbilicals, on risers, pipelines, jumpers, and through wellheads, "providing offshore engineers unprecedented monitoring capabilities that were not feasible until now." This is an industry first, they said.

SensorTran and ODI said the combined technologies "will provide offshore engineers with critical temperature data that will enable them to operate assets more efficiently."

According to the companies, the following benefits can be expected:

  • Monitors temperature to avoid wax or hydrate formation conditions
  • Reduces amount of chemical injection required
  • Optimizes energy for heating the flowline
  • Minimizes downtime during startup/shutdown
  • Reduces need for pipeline inspection gauges.
