CHELMSFORD, UK -- Global Marine Systems Ltd. has begun subsea cable installation for offshore engineering company Swecomex SA de CV. The cable will provide power connectivity between two oil platforms in the Bay of Campache in the Mexican Gulf of Mexico.

Swecomex is upgrading platforms Nahocha A and Takin A, which are owned by state oil company Pemex. Rapid power cable installation is required to keep the upgrade project on time and on budget, Global says.

The Global MarineInnovator will install an 11.5-km (7 mi) connecting power cable between the two platforms. The cable will be buried 1 m (3 ft) beneath the sea bed in 40 m (131 ft) water depth.

Global Marine will also complete "mattressing," a process that uses an electronic heave compensation control winch to lay protective concrete covers, over parts of the pipeline that connects the two platforms back to the mainland.

Global Marine expects the cable and mattress installation to take six weeks to complete.
