RUGBY, UK -- Cal Dive International has contracted Converteam to supply a dynamic positioning control system for the saturation diving vessel Uncle John.
This was the world’s first purpose designed and built semisubmersible dive support vessel. Today it operates chiefly in the Gulf of Mexico, providing pipelay, coring, well intervention, and construction services in addition to saturation diving.
Since the vessel was constructed in the 1970s, Converteam has contributed various generations of DP control systems, designed to interface with Uncle John’s propulsion and maneuvering system.
For the latest re-fit, Converteam will supply its C-Series of DP equipment in a “duplex” configuration designed to ensure that a single instance of system failure does not jeopardize crew safety, and to allow critical operations to be suspended in an orderly manner.
The new system should be installed and commissioned during 2011.
