PARIS – Statoil contracted Nexans to supply the direct electrical heating (DEH) system for subsea pipelines serving the Fossekall Dompap development in the Norwegian Sea.

The Fossekall Dompap oil and gas fields will be tied back to the NorneFPSO. Nexans previously supplied DEH systems for pipelines to other Norne satellites, Urd and Alve.

The $29-million contract covers delivery of a complete DEH system, including DEH riser cable with four power cores; armored feeder cables; a 25-km (15.5-mi) piggyback cable and associated accessories for connection to- and installation on the pipeline connecting the Fossekall Dompap subsea facilities with the Norne FPSO.

Nexans says the piggyback cable will incorporate a new integrated protection system which has been qualified to ensure protection from mechanical loads such as trawling.

DEH is designed to safeguard the wellstream flow through the pipeline to the platform. Alternating current transmitted from the DEH cable runs through the steel in the pipe, which heats up due to its own electrical resistance. This allows the pipeline to operate in a cost-effective, environmentally safe manner.

The cables will be manufactured at Nexans’ factory in Halden, Norway, for delivery in April 2012.

Fossekall Dompap is in 330-360 m (1,082-1,181 ft) of water, and is due to start production in December 2012. Statoil aims to recover 63 MMboe of oil and gas, mostly oil.
