LANCASTER, UK – Shell Offshore Inc. has contracted First Subsea Ltd. to supply Ballgrab subsea mooring line connectors for the Appomattox development in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico.Â
The semisubmersible four-column production platform will be moored in around 7,200 ft (2,195 m) of water using 16 Series III Ballgrab subsea mooring connectors (SMC) arranged in four x four clusters. The SMCs are manufactured in compliance withAmerican Bureau of Shipping (ABS) 2009 approval for special subsea mooring connectors, First Subsea said. Â
The company claims it is the only manufacturer of offshore mooring connectors to achieve ABS’ approval for the design and manufacture of large-scale R4 grade forgings more than 560 mm (22 in.) in diameter.
