Severn introduces dual-redundancy HIPPS
The Severn Glocon Group has developed a high integrity pressure protection system (HIPPS) for oil and gas topsides and subsea applications.
REDRUTH, UK –The Severn Glocon Group has developed a high integrity pressure protection system (HIPPS) for oil and gas topsides and subsea applications. The subsea HIPPS will be the first to combine independent electronic and mechanical systems to provide a dual redundancy, pipeline pressure protection system, said Severn Glocon.
The Severn Glocon subsea HIPPS adds a mechanical HIPPS alongside the electronicHIPPS, providing a second, independent, pressure protection system. The mechanical HIPPS system is more resistant to hydrate and heavy wax build-up, and so is less likely to be impaired by such deposits, the company said. Using the mechanical HIPPS valves in a parallel arrangement provides a second line of protection in the event of a fault with the electronic system.
Rated SIL 1 – 4, the electronic and mechanical HIPPS systems are designed and built in accordance with IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 safety instrumented systems (SIS) standards. Severn Glocon’s mechanical HIPPS comprises two pairs of pressure sensors linked to two final elements, each controlled by two independent hydraulic control sub-systems.
