This month Infield Systems Ltd (ISL) looks at the number of templates installed across the world. As should be expected, the North West European Continental Shelf represents 76% of all installations over time as captured on the Offshore Energy Database held by ISL. In Norway the use of templates is favored as a development scheme.
In terms of importance in the overall subsea market, templates make up a fraction of the market with manifold development types. Between 2000 and 2005, an average of 11 templates will be installed each year. Looking beyond the next couple of years there looks to be a number of templates due to be installed, particularly over 2009 and 2010, but looking at the status of the projects very few are at a stage of being more likely than possible. As a consequence we may not see some of these projects going ahead.
In comparison with manifolds, the geographical spread of template installations is much smaller. In West Africa and where fields are larger, manifolds seem to be favored in cluster developments, allowing greater flexibility in terms of further tie-ins and daisy-chaining of future developments.
