HERZELIA, Israel – Cyprus’ government has rejected Chevron’s updated development proposal for the Aphrodite gas reservoir south of the island in offshore Block 12, according to partner NewMed Energy.

Instead, the government has invited the co-venturers to continue discussions on a way forward in September.

Under the updated plan, production of gas and processing would have involved installation of a subsea pipeline and connection to existing offshore and onshore infrastructure in Egypt, in place of the FPSO over Aphrodite that featured in the originally approved plan.

The revised concept, the government said, would increase the project’s technical and commercial complexity and would likely fail to deliver the advantages put forward under the report issued on May 31.

NewMed said the partners would consider the implications of the decision but would also prepare for continued discussions with government representatives.

Aphrodite is in 1,700 m water depth, 160 km south of Limassol and 30 km northwest of the Chevron-operated Leviathan gas field in the Israeli sector.

The A-2 appraisal well, drilled in 2013, confirmed a contingent resource of about 98 Bcm with potential for a further 26 Bcm of prospective resources.
