KONGSBERG, Norway – Kongsberg Maritime has signed its first contract for a new type of ROV launch and recovery system (LARS), designed to handle ROVs and AUVs from unmanned vessels.

Ocean Infinity will install the system on its Armada fleet of robotic ships, which are controlled by teams based onshore.

The LARS employs a pure electric drive system, which lessens maintenance requirements, Kongsberg said. Launch and recovery takes place through the moonpool, with the release and capture of the ROV occurring beneath the sea surface, avoiding the risk of damage to the ROV from impact with the vessel hull.

Another claimed benefit is that launching and recovery can be conducted in higher sea states.
