How SEPLA Streamlines Deepwater Mooring
Key Highlights
- The SEPLA is up to four times lighter than suction piles. This simplifies fabrication and reduces steel requirements and costs.
- SEPLA anchors take less deck space. Fewer vessel trips and faster installation help reduce the project footprint.
- The SEPLA’s precise embedment ensures accurate geographical positioning, depth penetration and reliable deepwater mooring performance.
Anchor installation and recovery can be one of the most time-consuming phases of offshore operations, particularly in deepwater projects where vessel efficiency and installation costs are critical.
The Suction Embedded Plate Anchor (SEPLA) was developed to address this challenge by combining two proven concepts: suction piles and plate anchors.
Installed like a suction pile and embedded like a plate anchor, SEPLA uses suction-assisted deployment to achieve precise positioning and depth penetration before transitioning into its load-bearing operating position. The suction follower is then recovered and reused, leaving no mechanical components subsea.
Compared with conventional drag anchors, SEPLA requires no dragging during installation, provides greater geotechnical efficiency and can resist vertical loads. Compared with suction piles, SEPLA offers a simpler fabrication process, a smaller and lighter design, reduced steel requirements and lower manufacturing costs.
SEPLA also delivers significant logistical benefits. Multiple anchors can be transported on a single vessel, reducing installation time, vessel requirements and the number of offshore trips. These efficiencies can contribute to lower project costs and a smaller carbon footprint.

Since 1997, more than 180 SEPLAs have been installed worldwide.
