SANDNES, Norway – Vår Energi has booked the semisubmersible rig COSLProspector for a two-year drilling program in the Barents Sea region, in cooperation with Equinor.

Under the contract with COSL Offshore Management, the two Norwegian majors have secured access to the rig during 2024-2026, with an option for an additional three years.

Vår Energi plans to drill exploration and appraisal wells and various production wells, starting from the second half of 2024.

Main aims are to identify additional petroleum resources near the Goliat and Johan Castberg field centers, and to prove new gas resources that can lead to development of gas export infrastructure in the region.

Earlier this year, Norway’s offshore trunklines operator Gassco concluded that a pipeline from the Barents Sea, via Hammerfest in northern Norway and the establishment of a new process facility on nearby Melkøya, to the Norwegian Sea, could be the best way forward.

Continuous exploration activity over several years means better predictability and ripple effects for onshore suppliers, Vår Energi added.
