HOUSTON – IHC Merwede has contracts Alcoa to produce the first-ever aluminum alloy fallpipe for a dredge system. Tideway is the IHC customer.

The aluminum alloy pipe is said to be lighter, allowing dredging projects to be conducted as much as four times deeper than before, according to Mary Zappone, president, Alcoa Oil & Gas, reaching 2,000 m (6,562 ft).

Alcoa and IHC Merwede will provide a complete turnkey solution with the fallpipe for Tideway. Alcoa will manufacture the forgings and pipes in its Samara, Russia, facility, and work with a number of partners to machine, coat, and weld the pipes to finished specifications. The final system will be 2,000 m long and is being built for a specialized dredging ship.
