OSLO -- BP appears to have the upper hand in a dispute concerning a rig contract with Dolphin Drilling.

According to parent company Fred Olsen Energy, a judicial authority has ruled against the position of Dolphin Drilling, giving BP Exploration Operating Company the right to terminate the contract prior to the scheduled start of operations with no compensation.

Dolphin plans to request leave to appeal the ruling. However, the earliest the appeals’ court can issue its decision is February 2010.
