ABERDEEN, UK – Delmar Systems has supplied rig anchor release technology for Shell’s Penguins redevelopment in the UK northern North Sea.The RAR Plus device was installed on Diamond Offshore Drilling’s Ocean Endeavour semisubmerisble to help move the rig between the Pan West and Tybalt well locations at Penguins, 290 nautical miles northeast of Aberdeen.

According to Delmar, RAR Plus can disconnect a rig in one hour through acoustically releasing all mooring lines, compared with hours for some traditional methods. This allows the rig to move in shorter weather windows, also maximizing weather windows for continued operations.

By reducing the need for anchor handling vessels (AHVs) on hire and shortening the time taken to move the rig, the system allows operators to limit costs and CO2 emissions from the boats.

Delmar adds that demand for AHVs this summer is very high, pushing hire prices up further.

Delmar estimates that, compared to traditional techniques, the typical time saving for a rig disconnect, tow and reconnect in the North Sea will be up to 45%.
