NEWCASTLE-UPON-TYNE, UKRoyston has completed an engine overhaul on an offshore support vessel for German operator United Offshore Support (UOS).

The engineering team performed the 30,000 running-hour service on the main propulsion engines onboard the GH Challenger.

The 2009-built, 80-m (262-ft) length, 3,000-metric ton (3,307-ton) vessel is currently supporting hydrocarbon exploration operations in the Caribbean Sea.

Royston worked on the MAK 6M32C engines while the vessel was in dock at Curaçao. The project involved disassembling main components followed by fitting of new cylinder head assemblies, injectors and cylinder heads.

The team removed and cleaned cylinder liners while changing bearings in the bearing blocks; connecting rods were also left in place. They then fitted a new turbocharger to engine No.4 while the cartridge unit for the engine’s turbocharger was stripped, cleaned and rebuilt, including application a new bronze bearing, studs, and seals.

Finally, the engineers inspected the vibration dampers for two engines and cleaned/overhauled all associated pumps and coolers.

Royston had performed similar work on the Man engines of sister vessel GH Navigator while it was at San Giorgio Del Porto dry dock in Genoa, Italy.
