Equinor is complying with a halt work order from the US government concerning offshore construction for the Empire Wind project.

Equinor is complying with a halt work order from the US government concerning offshore construction for the Empire Wind project, the company said in a results statement.

The lease was obtained in 2017 with the project fully permitted in 2024, is currently about 30% complete and could provide electricity to half a million New York homes.

Equinor added that it is seeking dialogue with the authorities and assessing its legal options. It estimates Empire Wind’s gross book value at roughly $2.5 billion, including the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal.

“We have invested in Empire Wind after obtaining all necessary approvals, and the order to halt work now is unprecedented and in our view unlawful," President and CEO Anders Opedal said. “This is a question of the rights and obligations granted under legally issued permits and security of investments based on valid approvals. We seek to engage directly with the US administration to clarify the matter and are considering our legal options.”
