BOSTON, MA — Iberdrola subsidiary Avangrid has received the federal record of decision from the US Department of the Interior for its New England Wind project.

This brings the lease area closer to full federal approval for construction. Avangrid expects approval for the construction and operations plan to follow in July.

The development comprises the offshore New England Wind 1 and New England Wind 2 projects.

New England Wind 1 is in federal lease area OCS-A 0534, 30 miles south of Barnstable, Massachusetts, and it is due to make landfall under the Craigville Beach parking lot. It will border Vineyard Wind 1 to the south.

According to Avangrid, the project should lead to construction of a new staging and assembly port in Salem, also attracting an offshore wind davit crane manufacturer to New Bedford, and operations and maintenance facilities in New Bedford and Bridgeport, Connecticut.

An offshore wind training hub with Survival Systems USA is also set to go forward at the Port of Davisville in North Kingstown, Rhode Island.

"With the approval of the New England Wind project, we have now approved more than 10 GW of offshore wind projects in under three years," said Bureau of Ocean Energy Management Director Elizabeth Klein.
