OSLO, Norway — The Norwegian Energy Ministry has approved five sets of applicants for Norway’s first offshore wind auction, Sørlige Nordsjø II in the North Sea.

The auction opens at 9 a.m. GMT on March 18.

Last March the Ministry announced the competitive process, which attracted seven applications by the closing date of Nov. 15, 2023.

These documented that the candidates satisfied the minimum criteria for sustainability and positive ripple effects for local industries in Norway, and the applicants met the prequalification criterion of implementation ability.

The five bidding groups are as follows:

  • Aker Offshore Wind, bp and Statkraft;
  • Equinor and RWE;
  • Norseman Wind (Energie Baden-Württemberg);
  • Shell, Lyse and Eviny; and
  • Ventyr (Parkwind and Ingka).

The auction, now opened, will be conducted with open bidding. The qualified bidders will compete for state support by submitting increasingly lower bids until one bidder remains (the one with the lowest bid in terms of øre/kWh).
