ABB providing power input for Danish offshore wind/green hydrogen development

ESBJERG, Denmark  H2 Energy Esbjerg ApS has contracted ABB to provide basic electrical engineering for a new hydrogen development in Denmark.

A production facility in Esbjerg, due to start operating by 2027, will convert electricity generated from offshore wind into green hydrogen to support decarbonization of local heavy industry and road transportation. It will produce up to 90,000 t/year of hydrogen, equivalent to about 1.9 MMboe.

The hydrogen could also be used for the production of green e-fuels such as methanol and ammonia.

ABB’s engineering work scope covers the power distribution from the grid point of connection to the electrolyzers and other process equipment at the 1-GW hydrogen production facility, and the associated hydrogen distribution hub in Fredericia, Denmark.

The company will draw on its experience in the Power-to-X sector for the development of green hydrogen, which includes collaborations in Sweden, Norway, and elsewhere in Denmark.

Julian O'Connell, project director at H2 Energy Esbjerg ApS, said, “It is…critical to ensure we have a reliable and readily available supply of power to support operations at the distribution hub.”

The development should supply sufficient green hydrogen to satisfy the annual fuel consumption demands of more than 10,000 trucks.

According to the International Energy Agency’s Global Hydrogen Review, the pipeline of projects for the production of low-emission hydrogen could reach up to 24 MMt/year, if all planned developments go forward.
