OSLO, Norway – DNV is helping the KEPCO (Korea Electric Power Corp.) Research Institute to develop an offshore power grid plan to deliver renewable offshore wind energy to South Korea.
The project is due to be completed by mid-2025.
DNV, as technical adviser, will formulate a conceptual design and routing plan to support technically and economically optimized integration of large-scale offshore wind to the grid.
It also will propose analysis models of offshore network systems to assess suitable topology and design standards for the offshore system.
South Korea’s government wants renewable sources to account for 20% of the nation’s energy by 2030, with wind energy rising to 6% of the energy mix by 2030.
KEPCO aims to expand its network along the west coast of South Korea, with high capacity renewable offshore wind farm sites supplying power to demand centers in the capital Seoul and surrounding area.
DNV will develop system analysis models to study the design specification and topology for gigawatt-scale high-voltage direct current (HVDC) linkage technology, transferring capacity from offshore wind projects in the southwestern coast of the country.
It will also estimate the costs of the proposed integration plan to minimize the costs of integrating offshore wind farms into the onshore power grid.
DNV’s work scope includes compiling and analyzing offshore wind farm data; preparing a conceptual design of the power collecting element (bus) for the offshore wind farm; drafting functional specifications for AC/DC converter stations; analyzing the impact of the offshore DC system to the onshore AC system; reviewing the relevant environmental and code limitations for the network routing; and delivering a detailed design of the multi-terminal DC system, including the converter topology, location and control/operational strategy.
