RWE orders Siemens Gamesa turbines for North Sea Thor wind farm

RWE has signed a preferred supplier agreement with Siemens Gamesa for 72 SG 14-236 DD offshore wind turbines for the 1-GW Thor wind farm.

COPENHAGEN, Denmark  RWE has signed a preferred supplier agreement with Siemens Gamesa for 72 SG 14-236 DD offshore wind turbines for the 1-GW Thor wind farm, 22 km offshore Thorsmonde, west Jutland in northern Denmark.

The terms include a service contract. Deliveries remain subject to RWE’s final investment decision.

Installation of the turbines at sea should start in 2026, and will be performed from Esbjerg.

The SG 14-236 DD has a capacity of almost 15 MW and a 236-m diameter rotor with a swept area of 43,500 sq m, providing an increase of more than 30% in Annual Energy Production (AEP) compared with the turbine’s predecessor.

It also has Siemens Gamesa’s IntegralBlades, each 115 m long.

RWE will set up a service base at the port of Thorsminde, creating up to 60 permanent jobs such as technicians, engineers, nautical personnel and crew for the service vessels. The base should be fully operational from 2026 onward., while the wind farm should be in full service no later than end 2027.
