MALAGA, Spain – Eni subsidiary Plenitude will invest in Spanish floating offshore wind specialist EnerOcean, developer of the W2Power technology.

According to Eni, the concept, which involves mounting two wind turbines on the frame of the same floater, always facing the prevailing wind, offers one of the highest power-to-weight ratios and lowest levelized energy cost of any current floating wind power initiative.

Prototype tests have been completed at open sea in Spanish waters, making this the first multi-turbine solution to reach such a level of maturity, the company added.

Plenitude will contribute capital and technical support to the development program, initially holding a 25% equity share in EnerOcean. The latter will continue to operate independently.

Floating solutions are viewed as more practical options for wind farms off the deep waters off southern Europe.

EnerOcean, founded in 2007 and based in Malaga and Las Palmas, is working on its first wind farms off the Canary Islands via its subsidiary Canarrays.
