NEW YORK – Equinor and partner bp have agreed to convert the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal (SBMT) complex in Brooklyn, New York to a regional hub for offshore wind.

They plan to develop a port capable of receiving staging and assembling the largest and most advanced offshore wind technology components for the two companies’ Empire Wind/Beacon Wind projects and others emerging offshore the US East Coast.

Terminal operator Sustainable South Brooklyn Marine Terminal (SSBMT) and New York City Economic Development Corp also signed the agreement.

Equinor and bp will create an operations and maintenance hub and staging area at SBMT, investing up to $250 million in infrastructure upgrades, while also targeting a low-emissions facility.

Empire Wind and Beacon Wind will supply GW of power to New York residents. Equinor and bp’s activities at SBMT should support over 1,000 jobs annually in the region.

The 73.1-acre (29.6-ha) site is the sole industrial waterfront site in the New York City area with capacity to accommodate wind turbine generator staging and assembly at the scale required by component manufacturers, Equinor added.

Recently the company announced the opening of its New York offshore wind project office, adjacent to SBMT in Industry City.

Aside from serving as the hub for Equinor/bp’s regional offshore wind activities, it will include an offshore wind learning center.
