LONDON – Crown Estate Scotland has awarded rights for new offshore wind developments to various consortia under the ScotWind leasing round.

Shell and ScottishPower will develop large-scale floating wind farms off the east and northeast coasts of Scotland supplying a total of 5 GW of power.

They will deliver the projects through two joint ventures named MarramWind and CampionWind. Work has started on initial development planning in the run-up to a final investment decision.

bp and EnBW have an 860-sq km (332-sq mi) lease option for the Morven project around 60 km (37 mi) east of Aberdeen. They aim to supply around 2.9 GW of power coast.

Currently they are also jointly developing up to 3 GW of offshore wind in the Irish Sea via the Morgan and Mona projects, in lease areas for development awarded under the UK’s Round 4 leasing round.

Ocean Winds, an offshore wind energy company formed by EDP Renewables and ENGIE, will develop new offshore wind generation capacity over the 440-sq km (170-sq mi) NE4 site in the outer Moray Firth off northeast Scotland, which they have renamed Caledonia offshore wind farm.

The location is east of the joint venture’s 950-MW Moray East offshore wind farm, which started operations earlier this month.

Water depths at the proposed location are around 50 m (164 ft), with plans to install fixed-bottom foundations for the wind turbines and to provide around 1 GW. Some of this could be set aside for green hydrogen production.

Ocean Winds will issue an environmental impact report early next year and aims to complete construction later this decade.

Thistle Wind Partners, a consortium of DEME Concessions (Wind) NV, Qair Marine SAS, and Aspiravi International NV, will develop the 1-GW Cluaran Deas Ear project in the 187-sq km (72.2-sq mi) E3 plan option area, and the 1-GW Cluaran Ear-Thuath floating wind farm in the 201-sq km (77.6-sq mi) NE2 plan option area. The latter is expected to be developed in two phases.

The Floating Energy Allyance will develop a 1-GW floating wind project in the NE8 area, which is about 75 km (47 mi) to the northeast of Fraserburgh on the Aberdeenshire coast. The Allyance consists of BayWa r.e. Elicio, and BW Ideol.

The SSE Renewables-Marubeni-Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners consortium will develop a floating wind farm in the 858-sq km (331-sq mi) lease area in the E1 Zone in the Firth of Forth.

The TotalEnergies, Macquarie’s Green Investment Group, and RIDG joint venture will develop the 2-GW West of Orkney wind farm in the N1 area. According to TotalEnergies, this project represents potentially more than £4 billion ($5.4 billion) of investment.

Magnora Offshore Wind AS will develop a 500-MW floating wind project in the N3 area, 40 km (25 mi) offshore Western Isles. The planned wind farm will cover an area of about 100 sq km (39 sq mi) in water depths of 106 to 125 m (348 to 410 ft), and the concept base for the application is 33 semisubmersible floating wind turbines of 15 MW capacity.

According to partner TechnipFMC, the goal is to achieve consent in 2026, final investment decision in 2028, and start production in 2030.

Fred. Olsen Seawind and Vattenfall will develop a 798-MW project about 67 km (42 mi) off the east coast.

In addition, Scotland’s government has confirmed it will provide £80 million ($109 million) to support the proposed Acorn carbon capture and storage cluster project in northeast Scotland.
