MILAN, Italy Prysmian Group has received the notice to proceed to supply a submarine power cable system for the Vineyard Wind 1 wind farm offshore Massachusetts.

Under the approximately €200-million ($232-million) contract, the company will design, manufacture, install, and commission an HVAC (high voltage alternating current) cable system composed of two 220-kV three-core cables using extruded XLPE insulation. The project requires 134 km (83 mi) of power cables.

The submarine cables will be produced at the company’s centers of excellence in Pikkala, Finland, and Arco Felice, Italy. Its cable laying vessels Cable Enterprise and Ulisse will perform the installation operations. Delivery and commissioning are scheduled for 4Q 2023.

The company will also provide PRY-CAM permanent monitoring solutions that are said to allow online, accurate, and reliable in-depth information. This helps electric assets owners to increase uptime, asset longevity and safety, while reducing maintenance costs and risks.

Vineyard Wind 1 is an 800-MW project that will be located 24 km (15 mi) offshore Martha’s Vineyard. It is expected to be the first commercial scale offshore wind project in the US. It will consist of 62 wind turbines.
