ABS classes record-capacity floating wind farm offshore Scotland

ABERDEENInstallation has finished on the 48-MW Kincardine floating offshore wind farm, 15 km (9.3 mi) offshore eastern Scotland.

The complex, in water depths of 60-80 m (197-262 ft), is said to be the world’s largest floating offshore wind parks and has been classed by ABS.

It is designed to generate up to 218GWh/yr of electricity, sufficient to power around 55,000 households in Scotland.

ABS’s services included verifying full compliance with its Guide for Building and Classing Floating Offshore Wind Turbines, and covered all phases of the project including design, fabrication, transport and service inspections.

Each of the five floating turbines is also flagged with the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI). ABS worked closely with the RMI to determine suitable IMO requirements and undertook reviews as the RMI’s recognized organization. Pilot Offshore Renewables subsidiary Kincardine Offshore Wind developed the complex. ACS Group subsidiary Cobra Wind was responsible for the engineering design, supply, construction, and commissioning of the floating wind farm.
