HULL, UKSiemens Gamesa will expand its offshore wind turbine blade factory in Hull on the English east coast by 41,600 sq m (447,779 sq ft), under an investment of more than £186 million ($258 million). The program should be completed in 2023.

The company plans to manufacture next-generation blades at the expanded facility, which opened in 2016, and to recruit around 200 more staff, in addition to the current 1,000-strong workforce.

“The rapid development of the offshore wind industry – and continued, strong, long-term support provided by the UK government for offshore wind – has enabled us to power ahead with confidence when making these plans,” said Marc Becker, CEO of the Siemens Gamesa Offshore Business Unit.

Manufacture of other offshore wind turbine blade types already ordered from the factory will continue while the expansion takes place.

To date the facility has delivered more than 1,500 turbine blades.
