PARIS – Empire Offshore Wind LLC has named Nexans as the preferred supplier of export cables for the two-phase Empire Wind project off the coast of New York.

The turnkey projects cover the full design and manufacturing, as well as the laying and protection of more than 300 km (186 mi) of export cables that will deliver renewable energy to over 1 million homes.

Empire Wind is being developed by Equinor and BP through their 50/50 strategic partnership in the US.

Empire Wind is located 15-30 mi (24-48 km) southeast of Long Island and spans 80,000 acres (125 sq mi), with water depths between 65 and 131 ft (20 and 40 m). It is being developed in two phases (Empire Wind 1 and 2) with a total installed capacity of more than 2 GW (816 + 1,260 MW).

Two cable systems will connect the offshore substation for Empire Wind 1 to landfall and substation in Brooklyn, New York. Empire Wind 2 will link to Long Island by three parallel cables.

The company is expected to use its new DP-3 cable-lay vessel Nexans Aurora for the projects. The vessel is under construction at Ulstein Verft. Delivery is expected in May 2021.
