LONDON – The CIMC-owned semisubmersible Deepsea Yantai has spud an exploration well on the Hamlet prospect in the Norwegian North Sea.

Odfjell Drilling is operating well 35/9-16S, 7 km (4.4 mi) north of the Gjøa field in the Neptune-energy operated PL153 license.

Neptune’s director of subsurface in Norway, Steinar Meland, said a commercial discovery could be tied back to the Gjøa platform and produced with less than half the average CO2 emissions on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.

Hamelt is in 358 m (1,174 ft) of water, 58 km (36 mi) west of Florø. The target reservoir is the Lower Cretaceous Agat formation, at a depth of around 2,600 m (8,530 ft).

The main-bore (35/9-16S) could be followed by a side-track (35/9-16A), depending on the initial results.

Other partners are Petoro, Wintershall Dea and OKEA.
