ATHENS, Greece – DESFA, the owner and operator of Greece’s National Natural Gas Transmission System, has agreed to take a 20% stake in Gastrade.

Gastrade is working on an LNG floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) development offshore northeastern Greece that is intended to serve markets in southeastern and central Europe.

The FSRU will be stationed 17.6 km (10.9 mi) southwest of the port of Alexandroupolis and will have an LNG storage capacity of 170,000 cu m and a natural gas supply capacity of more than 5.5 bcm/yr.

It will be connected to the National Natural Gas System via a 28-km (17.4-mi) long pipeline, transporting regasified LNG to markets from Greece and other countries northwards to Hungary, Moldova, and Ukraine.

This is a European Project of Common Interest supported by the European Union to strengthen security of supply and diversify energy sources.

According to Gastrade, the project also supports other existing or planned gas infrastructure projects in the region such as the Greece-Bulgaria interconnector, TAP, the Bulgaria-Serbia interconnector, the Greece-North Macedonia interconnector, the Kavala Underground Gas Storage, and the Revithoussa LNG Terminal.

DESFA should provide additional expertise in operating the new terminal, Gastrade added.
