MONTREAL, Canada – ADNOC has awarded SNC-Lavalin a four-year advisory and engineering services contract to support its offshore operations power project.

The HVDC-VSC subsea transmission system, said to be the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, will power ADNOC’s offshore production operations.

Under the $3.6-billion project, a partnership with Abu Dhabi National Energy Company PJSC (TAQA), ADNOC expects to cut the carbon footprint of its offshore UAE operations by over 30% through replacing existing offshore gas turbine generators with power from shore.

The program involves developing two subsea HVDC-VSC links from onshore Alternating Current (AC) power substations to artificial islands.

SNC-Lavalin’s workscope includes the design review of the converter stations, the submarine cables, integration with the onshore and offshore grid, and reviewing the implementation plans for HSE, Quality Control and Quality Assurance of contractors.

In addition, the company will provide supervision during the construction and commissioning phases. It will draw on its HVDC center in Canada and its regional facilities in the Middle East.
