RIO DE JANEIRO – Petrobras has started oil and gas production through the FPSO Carioca, the first floater at the Sépia field in the presalt Santos basin.

The platform, chartered from Modec, is moored 200 km (124 mi) from the coast of Rio de Janeiro state, in a water depth of 2,200 m (7,218 ft). It is designed to process up to 180,000 b/d of oil and to compress up to 6 MMcm/d of gas.

Seven producing and four injection wells will be connected to the FPSO, with oil offloaded to tankers and gas exported through pre-salt gas pipeline routes.

Equipment onboard includes a system to remove CO2 from the produced gas and to reinject it into the reservoir, limiting the release of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere and at the same time improving oil recovery.

Sépia’s shared reservoir comprises the Sépia and Sépia Leste fields in the Transfer of Rights and Concession (BM-S-24) areas, both operated by Petrobras (97.6%), in partnership with Petrogal Brasil (2.4%).
