HOUSTON – Mexico’s Ministry of Energy (SENER) has informed Talos Energy that it has designated Pemex as operator of the offshore Zama unit, three days after receiving a letter from Pemex arguing for operatorship.

Talos pointed out that as the country’s first appointed private offshore operator, it drilled the exploratory well that led to discovery of the giant Zama oilfield in July 2017.

The company then drilled three further wells to delineate the field, which was shown to extend into an adjacent block operated by Pemex.

Talos added that it had advanced a comprehensive FEED study and submitted a development plan to Mexico’s National Hydrocarbons Commission (CNH) that it claims would maximize the field’s oil and gas recovery, and value to the Mexican people.

In addition, it had consistently demonstrated its capabilities to operate the unitized field given Zama’s geology and water depth and its safety and environmental track record in its Mexican operations.

The company said it was very disappointed with SENER’s sudden decision, but remains committed to maximizing value for its shareholders from Zama and will pursue all legal and strategic options to do so.
