ADELAIDE, AustraliaSantos has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Timor-Leste regulator to pursue carbon capture and storage (CCS) at the Bayu-Undan gas/condensate field in the Timor Sea.

The MOU details how the Bayu-Undan partners, the Autoridade Nacional do Petróleo e Minerais, and the Timor-Leste government will jointly assess the viability of repurposing the existing facilities and use of the reservoir for CCS.

These include sharing technical, operational and commercial information, reviewing the regulatory framework and local capacity, and setting a timeline for a decision.

According to Santos, CCS at Bayu-Undan could permanently store around 10 million metric tons/yr of CO2 and create new jobs and revenue for Timor-Leste.

Other partners in Bayu-Undan are SK E&S, INPEX, Eni, and Tokyo Timor Sea Resources.
