LONDON, UK --Northern Petroleum looks set to be awarded two offshore licenses in the southern part of the Italian Adriatic Sea.

The company has been invited to prepare environmental impact assessments for the licenses, d61F.R-.NP and d149DR-.NP. Both are adjacent to licenses FR39.NP and FR.40.NP, which contain three oil finds, one drilled by Agip in 1978 and two by Enterprise Oil in 1996 and 1998.

Of these, the Giove-1 wells established a 183 m (600 ft) hydrocarbon column with a 92 m (302 ft) oil leg of 16º API crude. Analysis at the time suggested oil in place of around 180 MMbbl. There has been no activity in this area since.

Results of a new study into Giove's potential and development options will be issued soon. Further analysis will follow of the two other discoveries, Medusa and Rovesti. Northern claims to be second only to Eni in acreage holdings on and offshore Italy, operating a total area of over 13,000 sq km (5,019 sq mi).
