ABERDEEN, UK --Fire in a turbine module caused 116 personnel to be evacuated yesterday from the Thistle Alpha platform in the UK North Sea.

According to operator Lundin Petroleum, the fire was extinguished shortly afterwards, and 53 crew members personnel sent temporarily to the nearby Murchison and Dunlin platforms are returning to Thistle A. The remainder will spend another night on Murchison before coming back.

Lundin adds that the emergency response team and the platform's safety systems worked well. However, an investigation is under way, and production has been shut down. Petrofac is duty holder for Thistle A, which comprises a steel jacket supporting a three-level deck.
