HOUSTON –The benefits of 3D numerical modeling on umbilical design and installation can save time and money by more precisely assessing the installation equipment and procedures.

DeepSea Engineering & Management's Mark Dixon told the 20th anniversary DOT conference and exhibition in Houston today that the company's modeling procedure makes possible a deeper understanding of umbilical design in addition to added optimization. "The traditional modeling techniques do not all interrogation and analysis of complex component interaction," said Dixon.

DeepSea's 3D technique allows comparison of various umbilical designs at the design stage, he said. Up to now, comparisons had been difficult because umbilical designs differed significantly. More accurate modeling also can target technical specifications during design to later optimize performance and to minimize manufacturing cost.

An added benefit to more efficient umbilical laying is that it can expand the "pool of suitable installation vehicles" to help reduce project schedules and delays.
