WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative has made available $37.5 million per year to establish four to eight research groups to study the effects of the Deepwater Horizon incident on the Gulf of Mexico. The research targets oil spill and dispersant impacts and how the GoM ecosystem responds to large accidental spills.
The initiative was created by BP and the Gulf of Mexico Alliance to identify and fund such research. BP has committed $500 million over 10 years to the program.
